3 Tips to Better Care for Your Oriental Rugs

Oriental rugs are beautiful, but they are expensive, so it is important that you know how to properly care for your rugs so they will look beautiful for many years to come. In addition to regular professional care from a carpet cleaning service, there are also many things you can do in order to maintain your Oriental rugs.

Vacuum

You need to take steps to keep your Oriental rugs clean between professional cleanings from a carpet cleaning service. While they are delicate, they can still be treated much the same as regular carpeting. For instance, they need to be vacuumed, and you should do this regularly, preferably once each week or even more frequently.

Only use a vacuum that has a canister, and avoid using one that has a brush that rotates, as they can be rough on rug fibers. Be sure to vacuum both with and against the pile, to suck up as much dirt as possible. Make sure that the vacuum cleaner doesn't suck up the fringes, as they are easily damaged. Instead, use your fingers to brush out dirt and straighten the fringes. Every so often, flip the rug and go over the underside with the vacuum to get dirt that is deeply lodged into the weave.

Cleaning

There are ways that you can keep your Oriental rug clean between professional cleanings. Be sure to allow no one to walk on your rugs while wearing outdoor shoes. This way, they aren't going to track dirt in and grind it into the rugs. It also prevents damage caused by hard soles and high heels.

If anything is spilled onto an Oriental rug, be sure to blot it up immediately with a clean, dry towel or paper towel. It is a good idea to have these specialty rugs treated with water repellants to prevent staining.

Basic Care

In addition to vacuuming and cleaning, there are other things you can do to keep your Oriental rugs looking new and beautiful. Rotate the rugs at least once a year, to keep them from wearing down in any particular spots. Avoid smoking near Oriental rugs, as it not only makes the rugs dirty, it can also damage them over time. Even fireplace smoke can damage these delicate rugs.

If your home is damp, a dehumidifier will help to protect your rugs from mold and mildew. Never set furniture or other heavy items onto an Oriental rug, as they will leave permanent indentations.
